Spirit Airlines is no more: Here’s what passengers should do now
May 5, 2026
Spirit Airlines ceased all operations on May 2, 2026, cancelling every flight and effectively disappearing overnight after a failed bailout and mounting financial pressure.
Thousands of passengers have been left stranded, but US authorities and rival airlines have stepped in with emergency support.

Here’s an up-to-date passenger guide for Spirit Airlines customers based on the latest developments.
First: don’t go to the airport
If you have a Spirit booking, do not head to the airport expecting your flight to operate.
In its announcement of the wind-down of operations, the airline explicitly told customers not to travel to airports for Spirit flights.
- All flights have been cancelled
- Airport counters are unmanned
- Customer service is offline
What is the government doing to help?
The US Department of Transportation has coordinated a response with major airlines to prevent travel chaos.
Key measures include:
- Fare caps and “rescue fares” on key routes
- Coordination with airlines, including United, Delta, American, Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier and others
- Support for stranded passengers trying to get home
“In a matter of hours, we’ve activated our airline partners to ensure passengers are not stranded, communities maintain route access, fares do not skyrocket, and Spirit’s workforce is connected to new job opportunities,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement about the airline’s collapse issued on May 2.
How do you get home if you’re stranded?
This is the most urgent issue for many Spirit travellers—and there are options.

1) Book a “rescue fare”
Major airlines are offering discounted or capped tickets specifically for Spirit passengers.
- Some fares are as low as $99 on certain routes
- Offers are time-limited (often just a few days)
- You may need proof of your original Spirit booking
Airlines, including JetBlue, American, United and Southwest, are all participating.
2) Book a normal ticket (if needed)
If rescue fares are unavailable:
- Book the next available flight yourself
- Prioritise major carriers with frequent service to ensure the availability of your itinerary
3) Keep every receipt
You may be able to recover your costs, in whole or in part, later through credit card claims or travel insurance.
Can you get a refund for your Spirit ticket?
The answer depends on how you booked and how you paid.
If you paid by credit or debit card
In its wind-down announcement, Spirit stated it would automatically process refunds for customers who booked directly on its website using their credit cards or debit cards.
If you have not seen a refund come through, you can request a chargeback with your card provider. This is often the fastest and most reliable route to get your money back.

If you booked through a travel agent
Contact your travel agent immediately to request a refund. Your travel agent may also help you book an alternate flight on a “rescue fare,” but you must act quickly.
If you booked through an online travel agent (OTA) or booking platform
If you booked your flight through an online travel agent or booking platform, you should request an immediate refund directly with that platform. Alternatively, you can contact your card provider to request a chargeback.
Some OTAs may help you rebook your flight with an alternate carrier. Or you can use the booked ticket as proof to qualify for a rescue fare with an alternative airline.
If you paid with points, vouchers, or credits
This situation is more uncertain, and you may not recover the original value of your ticket since the airline’s loyalty program has also been shut down.
As the airline stated, “Compensation for Guests who booked flights using any other methods, including a voucher, credit or Free Spirit points, will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy process.”
Because claims will go through bankruptcy proceedings, recovery of your ticket’s value is not guaranteed.
The airline has set up a dedicated website to update the public on its bankruptcy process.

- Southwest will also offer discounted rates for international flights

- United is also reviewing adding capacity on select routes to help more stranded Spirit customers reach their destinations.
Breeze Airways
While not offering a rescue fares program, Breeze Airways is expanding its planned entry at Atlantic City International Airport, announcing four additional routes to help cover the gap left by Spirit, which was previously the dominant carrier.

- Breeze will add nonstop flights from Atlantic City to Orlando, FL beginning July 3 with daily flights and introductory one-way fares starting at $89.
- Three new routes will launch in the fall, including:
- Myrtle Beach, SC beginning October 22 operating twice-weekly on Thursdays and Sundays with fares starting at $49.
- Fort Myers, FL beginning October 22 with three-times weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Fares start at $89.
- West Palm Beach, FL launches on December 17, operating three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays with fares starting at $89.
- In January, Breeze had announced new routes at ACY
- Charleston, SC, operating nonstop on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting May 6
- Raleigh-Durham, NC, operating nonstop on Thursdays and Sundays starting June 11
- Tampa, FL a one-stop, no-change-of-plane BreezeThru service operating on Thursdays and Sundays starting June 11.
Will other airlines rebook you automatically?
In a word, NO. Spirit cannot rebook you on alternate carriers now that it has ceased operations, and the carriers offering emergency services will only be aware of your need if you contact them directly.
You will need to book a new flight yourself, and you should do so quickly to ensure discounted fares are still available on your route with the chosen carrier.
What about travel insurance?
Check your policy immediately. Depending on your type of insurance, you may be covered for:
- Trip interruption
- Emergency transport
- Accommodation if stranded
But not all policies cover airline bankruptcy or financial failure, so there are no guarantees.
Is Spirit truly gone forever?
The airline, which came back from the brink of bankruptcy several times, finally conceded defeat on May 2 after a possible government bailout fell through. Officially, it is no more. Still, Spirit has some ardent supporters, and they are crowdfunding to bring Spirit back into operations in one form or another.

As reported by USA Today, Hunter Peterson, a TikTok content creator, launched a campaign to buy and revive Spirit Airlines shortly after the airline announced its wind-down.
The letsbuyspiritair.com crowdfunding site has raised more than $88 million so far, but unfortunately, these are theoretical dollars. No actual funds are being collected that would help Spirit cover its debt and relaunch operations.
The reality is that Spirit has now ceased to exist as a carrier. We may say that Spirit is gone, but not forgotten.
If the brand flies again, it will likely be as a new carrier operating under license to use the former Spirit brand. Sadly, similar attempts to revive Pan Am and Eastern Airlines have not met with long-term success.
Many US carriers have also made offers to employ Spirit Airlines’ now displaced staff, so the spirit of Spirit may continue to fly on by any other name.
