The founder of start-up long-haul carrier Global Airlines has responded to criticism surrounding the airline’s maiden passenger service, pledging ongoing improvement after the fledgling operation operated its maiden Glasgow-New York-Glasgow service.

In a social media post, James Asquith acknowledged the challenges faced during the airline’s inaugural flight, while praising the progress made on the second. “I could not be more proud of the huge improvement in service from flight #1 to #2. We will keep trying to improve every single flight that passes,” he wrote.

Asquith added context to the logistical demands of operating the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, which Global Airlines is seeking to bring back into regular service. “It’s worth remembering, the size of the A380, with a massive amount of products across many galleys, means a logistical puzzle, and things take time to learn from,” he said.

The airline is being closely watched by industry observers, given the rare return of the A380 to new service by a start-up.

Some early passengers, including prominent YouTube content producers, raised concerns about service levels on the debut flight. They complained about a slower than expected meal service, and a 12-year-old aircraft that was said to be showing its age.

But Asquith concluded: “We certainly learnt and the reaction from passengers on the JFK to GLA flight seems to be fantastic.”
