Stratolaunch’s Talon-A reaches double-digit reusable hypersonic flights for customers
The Stratolaunch Talon-A has successfully completed more than ten test flights. Stratolaunch’s new hypersonic test vehicle is achieving for hypersonic flight testing something similar to what SpaceX’s reusable rockets have for low-Earth orbit launches.
Stratolaunch completes over ten Consecutive Hypersonic Flights

The update came a week after Stratolaunch announced it had again test-flown its Talon-A.
Stratolaunch Systems is a private aerospace company specializing in high-speed flight test services. It was founded in 2011 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and Scaled Composites founder Burt Rutan.
Talon-A was first proposed in 2018 and made its first powered flight in 2024, which ditched in the ocean. The first fully reusable hypersonic test vehicle flew in May 2025.
Stratolaunch spoke of the system enabling the development of unspecified next-generation high-speed aerospace systems. Talon-A is a notable part of the development of hypersonic missiles as well as other research programmes.
The Talon-A rocket-powered, hypersonic flight vehicle
Talon-A is the first reusable, fully autonomous air-launched hypersonic aircraft capable of conducting test flights without a human in the loop.
It is designed to accelerate the development of hypersonic technology and is able to reach speeds exceeding Mach 5.

It is air-launched by a mothership. Stratolaunch built the unique and massive twin-fuselage Scaled Composites Model 351 Stratolaunch, or “Roc,” as a testbed for hypersonic aircraft.
Images released show the tests were conducted with Roc as well as the Spirit of Mojave, which is Virgin Orbit’s former modified Boeing 747-400.

Stratolaunch noted, “With two carrier aircraft and two Talon-A hypersonic aircraft, customers can now access routine, on-demand hypersonic flights, enabling faster technology maturation.”
Making hypersonic testing routine and affordable
The company hailed the development as a potential “turning point” in hypersonic testing, allowing testing to be more affordable and open to more companies.
Stratolaunch stated the milestone highlights its position at the forefront of hypersonic innovation. After its hypersonic flight, Talon-A lands on a standard runway and is available for reuse. This dramatically helps to reduce turnaround time and cost.

Dr. Zachary Krevor, CEO and President of Stratolaunch, stated they are “transforming hypersonic testing” from a “rare event” into a “routine service.”
Krevor claims they will empower customers to “innovate at unprecedented speed.” Talon-A supports a variety of payloads and mission profiles, including sensor validation and advanced materials testing.
Stratolaunch’s Talon-A primarily serves U.S. government/defence customers for hypersonic flight testing, but the company wants to expand to include commercial customers.
The core programme is the Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonics Test Bed (MACH-TB) 2.0 project, which extended a $90.6 million contract in 2025.

While not necessarily directly related to Stratolaunch, the US Air Force is currently developing the air-breathing scramjet-powered Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM / AHM-4A) as well as the boost-glide AGM-183A Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW).
The US Army is also developing the ground-launched Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) / “Dark Eagle,” while the Navy is working on its sea-launched Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS).
