Sweden’s FMV (Försvarets materielverk, Defence Materiel Administration) has been tasked with purchasing three more Grob 120TP aircraft, known as the SK40 in Swedish Armed Forces use. The aircraft is used for what Sweden refers to as Grundläggande Flygutbildning (GFU) or elementary/basic flying training. The contract also includes the purchase of a spare engine, more training aids and planning tools.

The FMV signed an initial contract with Grob Aircraft SE to purchase seven SK40 aircraft, training, training aids and a simulator in 2021. The aircraft were acquired to replace some of the air force’s SK60 aircraft then being used for basic flying training. Three further aircraft were ordered in 2022, and deliveries to Linköping/Malmen took place in 2023 and 2024. The Swedish air force has ten aircraft and a simulator today, as well as the associated training system, and a maintenance contract with Grob Aircraft SE.

The FMV has now triggered an option in the contract, under which the flight school will receive a total of 13 aircraft. This will provide: “increased robustness in terms of availability,” the FMV says.

Delivery of the aircraft to the FMV is expected during December 2024, and to the Air Force during the first quarter of 2025.
