Flydubai to retrofit almost half its 737 MAX fleet with larger Boeing Space Bins

An agreement between Dubai-based carrier flydubai and Boeing will see 21 of the low-cost carrier’s 737 MAX aircraft retrofitted with larger overhead storage bins.
The agreement was made during this year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg, with each Space Bin accommodate up to six standard-sized bags per bin, compared to four bags in a standard bin. The airline currently operates a fleet of 88 Boeing 737 aircraft, 59 of which are 737 MAX aircraft.
Doug Backhus, VP of Cabin, Modifications and Maintenance at Boeing explained that the retrofit is in response to passengers “making the connection between bin capacity and the extra room they need and expect for their carry-on bags.”
Boeing’s larger Space Bins will “provide passengers with added convenience and increased storage space that rivals the experience offered on a wide-body aircraft,” added Daniel Kerrison, SVP of Inflight Operations at flydubai.
One of the biggest frustrations for passengers during the boarding process – and a key reason why people rush to queue as soon as their flight is called – is the competition for overhead bin space. A sought-after commodity on a flight, access to overhead storage has a direct impact on both the passenger experience and boarding efficiency. It’s encouraging therefore to see that flydubai is addressing this by increasing overhead storage capacity helping to ease the pressure and improve the overall boarding process.
