All Nippon Airways (ANA) is marking 40 years of international flights and 30 years of Pokémon-themed special aircraft liveries by introducing three new editions of the colourful aircraft.

The airline launched the world’s first Pokémon Jet in 1998 and has since grown with the franchise, with the Pokémon jets enjoying a loyal following of aviation fans.

As with previous iterations, ANA says it has centred the three new Pokémon jets around ensuring passengers “experience the excitement and fun of the journey with Pokémon.”

Fire: The new red Pokémon jet livery

The first new livery ANA has unveiled is the fire Pokémon jet, also known as the red jet—a Boeing 787-8 registered as JA819A. It follows the theme of other Pokémon jets with Pikachu and fellow-Pokémon friends setting off on an adventure.

On this jet, Pikachu’s companion is Pombon, a puppy Pokémon that is part of the new Pokémon Winds and Waves collection.

Ten unique Fire Pokémon feature from nose to tail along both sides of the aircraft for this livery, including Charmander, Fuecoco, and Tepig.

The Pokémon fun continues inside the aircraft, with fire Pokémon appearing on printed headrest antimacassars and on service items such as cups and napkins.

Where to catch the Red Pokémon Jet

ANA will launch the red Pokémon jet in late July on the following domestic routes:

  • To/from Tokyo (Haneda): Sapporo (New Chitose), Hakodate, Osaka (Itami), Takamatsu, Matsuyama, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Okinawa (Naha), Miyako, and Ishigaki

Water: The new blue Pokémon jet livery is still to be revealed

ANA has also announced a third special blue livery featuring water Pokémon, which will be painted on one of the airline’s Boeing 737-800s and will operate on domestic routes.

While ANA has not yet published a preview of the new livery, it has revealed that it will feature a new Gecqua Pokémon from the Winds and Waves collection.

Collectibles and more coming soon

ANA has other Pokémon surprises in store, including new commemorative products for customers and special merchandise to be unveiled at a later date.

It is this combination of livery and passenger-experience elements that has made the Pokémon franchise aircraft and other Kawaii (cute)- themed liveries, like EVA Air’s Hello Kitty planes, so effective for airline brands.

These lovable cartoons help airlines connect with fans by showing appreciation for their icons. The cabin items and other themed amenities leave passengers with cherished mementoes of a very special journey.
