SAF only part of solution to net zero challenge, says IAG CEO
Sustainable aviation fuel is only part of the solution to the environmental challenge the aviation industry is facing, according to IAG CEO Luis Gallego.
Speaking to Aerospace Global News, he said: “We have a path to net zero emissions by 2050. SAF is one of the technologies we are working on.
“We are also bringing the newest aircraft in the market; that can help to reduce the fuel emissions by around 40%.
“We are also investing in the future, for example hydrogen aircraft. We are investing in several [hydrogen] projects, and carbon capture technologies.
“We are also working to improve operational efficiency and we are pushing to have a Single European Sky.”
Gallego added: “We are investing in different generations of SAF. The third generation and power to liquid SAF is going to be the most scalable one. In the short and medium term, we need to take all the SAF available from all the different technologies. Last year we bought about 12% of all the SAF available in the world.”
IAG has led aviation action on climate change for over a decade, having played a key role in establishing the global CORSIA scheme, and in 2019 becoming the first airline group worldwide to commit to net zero emissions by 2050.
The IAG Flightpath net zero strategy, launched in 2019, is putting environmental sustainability at the heart of the business.
