Raytheon uses technological capabilities to bring together domains maritime, air, cyber and space.
The company employs around 2,000 people across the UK with manufacturing bases in Scotland, which includes space grade manufacturing, and an aircraft maintenance and support centre in Broughton in Wales. The company’s cyber capabilities such as cyber hardening, artificial intelligence and machine learning in Manchester and Gloucester and manufacturing technology centres of excellence in Harlow and London. The company is also involved with army training in Salisbury and, with partners at Capita, has won the contract for the new navy training.”
He said: “It’s an exciting time and a company really that is at the heart of what we call multi-domain operations.”
Day said the company’s technological specialisms and capabilities in the UK and US has enabled “high-capacity throughput communications that serve both space-based services such as PNT (The National Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Advisory Board), intelligence, reconnaissance and earth observation capabilities.”
Company has been in sector since Apollo missions
He explained a touch-free display at Space-Comm Expo was being used to explain Raytheon’s capabilities: “Going through and enabling aircraft and services down to support activities, in this case for disaster relief for humanitarian operations, and NGO-type activities and paramedic paramilitary organisations but actually, of course, extending out to a conflict situation, it’s the same type of architecture that you need to operate now going forward and that means bringing together domains both in the ground in maritime, air, cyber and space.”
Raytheon has had operations in space since the early days of the sector. Day explained: “From the US side of the house, we have been in space since its inception including the Apollo missions. We’ve trained every NASA astronaut, we run the east and west coast ranges and we develop centres and payloads for NASA for DoD and for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather side of the house in the US.”
“In the UK …we have a heritage in space-based manufacturing in Scotland including power converters that are flying around us on the International Space Station. We do a whole load of activities around cyber hardening of infrastructure and ground support areas, we do integration with air ISR capabilities for defence customers and we actually bring all that together and employ edge processing and capabilities with edge devices for exploitation of that whole constellation down on the ground, be it in a military or a civil capability.”
