Lufthansa Airlines has announced an ongoing retrofit of its entire Airbus A320 Continental fleet with new cabins, including new seats, power access, and larger overhead bins. The airline will install new cabins on 38 aircraft in total, with the first A320 already equipped and flying.

Lufthansa modernises passenger experience on long-haul and short-haul routes

The German flagship, which is currently celebrating its centenary, is already updating its long-haul cabins with the new Allegris cabin product. Lufthansa is ensuring continuity of the passenger experience by also upgrading the aircraft that operate its mid- and short-haul routes.

Lufthansa recently announced plans to extend the Allegris long-haul product to its Airbus A380 fleet to ensure passengers enjoy a familiar and harmonised cabin environment on any route or aircraft.

“Our ambition is clear: We want to offer our guests a premium experience on short- and medium-haul routes as well. The A320 family is our largest fleet – that’s why we’re investing in the modernisation of more than 30 aircraft,” said Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, in the airline’s announcement.

The airline began its narrowbody retrofit programme last spring, installing Geven seats equipped with USB ports for charging personal devices, and smartphone and tablet holders. Lufthansa is also installing larger overhead bins to accommodate passenger cabin bags.

“We’re presenting our guests with a modern, high-quality cabin whose design is inspired by our new long-haul deliveries,” Ritter said. “Our guests can look forward to more comfort and significantly more space for their carry-on baggage.”

In Business Class, the new seats feature a backrest that provides extra recline.

Each new seat includes its own USB-A and USB-C ports, providing power access to charge passengers’ mobile devices.

In addition, all seats have tablet and smartphone holders, providing passengers with a hands-free view of in-flight entertainment on their devices.

Lufthansa already flies Geven Essenza seats on its next-generation Airbus fleet, including approximately 18 Airbus A320neos and all of its Airbus A321neos, according to seat data from aeroLOPA.com.

Lufthansa A320s get 40% larger overhead bins

The airline has installed 40% larger overhead bins in the new cabin, allowing significantly more carry-on luggage.

Bags can now be stowed vertically, which the airline says makes boarding more efficient by allowing passengers to stow their luggage more quickly.

“The clean design of the new bins creates a fresh and modern overall impression of the cabin,” Lufthansa states.

The first Airbus A320-200 equipped with the new cabins (registration “D-AIZY”) has been back in service since mid-February. The airline says the refit process takes an average of 30 days and requires installing 1,000 components sourced from 100 suppliers.

By 2029, Lufthansa plans to have completed the retrofit of 38 Airbus A320s.
