Joby Aviation is one step closer to realising its on-demand eVTOL air taxi operations, having received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for its proprietary ElevateOS software system.

The ElevateOS operating system includes an operations core, a pilot app and a rider app, with the matching engine described as being similar to those used by ride-hailing apps today. Joby will use ElevateOS to support its own air taxi operations, as well as making it available to selected purchasers via a wider services package.

Joby has been testing and developing its software tools in-house since acquiring Uber Elevate in 2019. However, Eric Allison, chief product officer at Joby and former head of Uber Elevate, described Joby’s upcoming operations as “[not] like any sort of air travel that’s existed before”. With the expectation of just minutes between boarding and booking, “that required us to totally rethink the software and the operations of these aircraft,” he added.

Allison concluded that Elevate OS is the  “most sophisticated, efficient, and flexible suite of air operations tools available today” and marks the “result of many years of iteration and real-life experience”.
