The European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) has awarded Serco a six-year €21m ($22m) contract to run the Copernicus Analyst and Controller Service.
The contract, which is an extension of an existing contract signed in 2014, will see an additional nine Serco employees recruited to deliver the CO2 Monitoring satellite mission, which will be the first mission to measure how much carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere specifically through human activity using satellite data.
Roberto Mulatti, Serco’s managing director for space in Europe, said, “We are delighted to have been selected by EUMETSAT to ensure the continuation of high-quality real time operations services for Copernicus, which is a critical component of the Copernicus Sentinels mission operations. This new contract is a major milestone for Serco in Europe and strongly reinforces our commitment to support EUMETSAT’s critical missions”.
Serco’s teams of spacecraft controllers and analysts will be responsible for monitoring and controlling the satellites’ journey on a 24/7 basis, ensuring the health and safety of the spacecraft, and downloading data from the satellite.
The company already provides a wide range of services to EUMETSAT, including real-time satellite operations services for all EUMETSAT satellite constellations and other engineering activities supporting the satellite and ground segments. It also supports the Copernicus programme through a variety of services across Europe, ensuring that Copernicus has the data and systems it needs to deliver its essential Earth observation services.
