Ongoing technological improvements, certification and the expansion into Europe and beyond are all on the to-do list of the boss of Cambridge Sensoriis.

CEO Steve Clark said the company was set up about four years ago to develop radar that is as small, energy efficient and lightweight as possible for drone use, and it is now working in the eVTOL sector too.

He added despite a number of successes and radar’s 100-year-old history, the company still has plenty of work to do to further optimise the technology.

Clark said: “For drone operations to scale widely we need to ensure that they are resilient and reliable in a wide range of conditions over long distances, different weather conditions [and] perhaps operating in built-up areas.”

And he said Sensoriis experts are always looking for new ways to develop its radar technology, beyond standard optimum operations.

Clark added: “We’re a technology company so we will continue to develop the technology and for radar that means seeing smaller objects further away [and] detecting them faster.

“[We want it to be] saying more about the things we’re detecting – the classification of different object types – and in terms of the business I want to see that grow.”

Clark said the company was also increasingly looking at using the technology in crewed eVTOL aircraft too, although achieving the correct certification is a key focus here.

“We see our radar-sensing capabilities as part of the detect-and-avoid solution for drones and for eVTOL crewed aviation,” he added.

“We’re working at the moment on certification for our radar-sensing technology to be used in and around crewed aviation, not only pilotless drones.”

Finally, Clark said business expansion is also on the cards and he has started working with Spain’s Barcelona Drone Centre to start showcasing Sensoriis technology to their clients.

“We want to us that as a springboard to promote our technology and capability in Europe and further afield,” he added.

Cambridge Sensoriis is on the Farnborough Consortium stand in Hall 1 on Wednesday 24 July.
