Ireland-based regional aircraft lessor, Abelo, has converted an initial order for 10 ATR 42 short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft to a mix of five ATR42-600 and five ATR72-600 and has additionally firmed up an order for three ATR 72-600.

Abelo’s decision, which was finalised in late 2024 and builds on an agreement made during the Dubai Airshow in 2023, underlines interest from the regional aviation market for the 50-seater turboprop segment.

“This fleet expansion underscores our shared vision of enhancing regional connectivity and providing top-tier air transportation solutions to passengers across diverse networks,” said ATR’s CEO, Nathalie Tarnaud Laude. “These additional ATR 42s and 72s will enable Abelo to continue matching aircraft demand efficiently, leveraging the industry’s most cost-effective regional aircraft while promoting the transition towards responsible aviation,” she added.

Abelo offers a range of services, including aircraft leasing (primarily turboprops such as ATR and Dash 8 models), fleet management and remarketing. The company’s portfolio is tailored to regional and short-haul operators, making it a significant player in the regional aviation sector.

ATR’s focus on the intrinsic efficiency of turboprop technology and its claim to emitting 45% less CO2 than similar-sized regional jets, make it an ideal option for Abelo to demonstrate how it is embracing innovation and sustainability. “By diversifying our fleet with ATR 42-600 and 72-600 aircraft and adding three new ATR 72-600, we continue to provide our customers with exceptional performance, reduced emissions and enhanced passenger comfort,” concluded Stephen Gorman, CEO at Abelo.

“This investment strengthens our ability to meet the evolving needs of regional aviation.”
