Air India debuts first retrofitted A320neo as part of major fleet upgrade

March 20, 2025

Air India has reintroduced its first retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, an Airbus A320neo registered as VT-EXN.
The aircraft, which has undergone a comprehensive interior overhaul, is the first of 27 narrowbody jets selected for a complete retrofit under Air India’s $400 million fleet modernisation programme.
The upgrades include new seating, carpets, curtains, and cabin paneling, with Air India’s refreshed branding.
The A320neo now features a three-class cabin configuration, comprising eight Business Class seats, 24 Premium Economy seats, and 132 Economy Class seats. The cabin also now includes USB ports and portable electronic device (PED) holders.
As part of the extensive retrofit programme, the airline is installing over 3,500 new Economy Class seats, more than 600 Premium Economy seats, and 200 Business Class seats across its A320neo fleet.
VT-EXN will operate on domestic and short-haul international routes, alongside 14 recently added A320neo aircraft. The remaining 26 aircraft are set to complete their retrofits by the third quarter of 2025, ensuring passengers experience consistent comfort and service across the fleet.
In addition to its narrowbody aircraft, Air India is also embarking on a major retrofit of its widebody fleet. This includes the Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, with the first 787 scheduled to undergo refurbishment next month.
