Using new technologies is all about productivity, agility and meeting your business aims, Jean-Luc Badoc, Dassault Systèmes,  told FINN at a recent industry event focused on Industry 4.0.

He noted that industry 4.0 technologies and digitalisation – known as aerospace 4.0 in the aerospace and defence industry – have the potential to make a huge impact, if harnessed correctly.

“We shouldn’t digitise just for digitisation’s sake,” Badoc said.

“All of those technologies, mature or emerging, should be used [towards] the goal. You don’t need to digitise just to digitise; you digitise because you want to transform your company.”

In action

In 2017, Dassault Systèmes signed a deal with Boeing to modernise the manufacturer’s production system, and in February this year, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Airbus to co-operate on the implementation of collaborative 3D design, engineering, manufacturing, simulation and intelligence applications.

Badoc said a Boeing executive laid out the challenge like this: “We want to ultimately take our order book and manufacture [it] – that can be a mix of many airplanes – while reshuffling the factory, real-time, live.”

“In the aerospace and defence domain, there are emerging companies from China and Russia that will come with new airplanes,” Badoc commented. “So Boeing and Airbus need to enhance their productivity to take that their costs down to make sure that they can stay in business. It’s as simple as that.”

Badoc said Dassault Systèmes’ goal is to be a trusted advisor to customers and enable their transformation.
