Joby nears commercialisation of ridesharing eVTOL

Electric air taxis seek to affordably save time for daily destinations.

Joby is pioneering two eVTOL technologies; the battery aircraft, with a range of up to 100 miles, is ideal for transportation in and around metropolitan areas and routes like airport to city centre.

The hydrogen electric option allows for a 523 mile range, connecting cities and entire regions together. The aircraft flies at 200 mph.

One of Joby’s selling points is the quietness of the aircraft, hovering at 65 decibels and flying at 40 decibels, similar to the volume of normal conversation or background noise.

Commercial services are also set to be affordable, entering the market at prices comparable to a taxi in New York City or London and becoming more accessible over time.

“As the manufacturing volumes go up, as the utilisations go up, we want to bring that price point down and make it more and more affordable over time so that it becomes a mode of daily transportation,” explained founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt.

Training for pilots can occur through Joby’s training course, designed for commercial pilots, or through their new academy.

“This is happening, and it’s happening today,” said Benvirt. “I’ve been on this journey for 15 years, and to be right at the start of commercial operations, and to realise my childhood dream of taking our species and moving us into the air for daily transportation, it’s just phenomenal.”
