ATR’s new Cabinstream in-flight entertainment (IFE) system, which launched last week at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg, has the potential to save weight, boost revenue and improve passenger experience. Zuzana Hrnkova, Vice President, Marketing, ATR, explains more.

At the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg last week, ATR introduced Cabinstream. Developed in coordination with New Zealand supplier Phitek, Cabinstream allows passengers to access a variety of multimedia content on their personal electronic devices, such as newspapers, music, films, TV series and downloadable travel guides.

Because they are using their own devices, a key benefit of Cabinstream is the all-important weight-saving it offers airlines. Meanwhile, operators can profit from additional revenue opportunities, through the new advertising space that Cabinstream will offer.

Launching with Afrijet

Cabinstream is an option on all new ATRs and can be retrofitted on existing aircraft. Afrijet is Cabinstream’s launch customer and will introduce the system into its fleet of ATRs before the end of 2018.

Zuzana Hrnkova, ATR, told FINN: “For airlines, it means weight saving on one hand because all in-flight magazines and newspapers, etc. [can] be digitalised and stored on the box. And for passengers, it means more fun and entertainment on the flight. “

Following the launch with Afrijet, ATR is targeting customers worldwide.

Hrnkova adds: “We have 200 airlines operating our aircraft in 100 countries worldwide. We have operators flying the aircraft from 10 minutes up to nearly four hours. Especially in the Pacific Islands, we have customers who are really keen to have our system on board. And there are others in other corners of the world.”
