Vietnam Airlines has announced a new route to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport this summer, connecting the capital Hanoi with an Airbus A350. This will mark the carrier’s Dutch debut, and builds on its existing European network to destinations across the continent, including Frankfurt and Paris.

Vietnam Airlines is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, so this route comes as no major surprise. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is also a member, and the two are expected to leverage their partnership to ensure the success of the new route. The other major SkyTeam hub in the continent, Paris Charles de Gaulle, is served by the airline from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.

Vietnam Airlines’ new flights from Amsterdam to Hanoi

Vietnam Airlines announced this week that it would be adding a new thrice-weekly connection from Hanoi to Amsterdam from 16 June. It will use an Airbus A350 aircraft to operate the service, which will create “an inspiring bridge between Vietnam and the Netherlands,” Schiphol Airport said in a statement.

The sector is currently not served by any airline. In fact, no carrier currently connects Vietnam to the Netherlands. The most affordable one-stop options seem to route via China or Hong Kong with China Eastern, China Southern and Cathay Pacific.

LATAM Airlines expands flights from São Paulo to Amsterdam

In a schedule update today, LATAM Airlines further increased frequencies on its upcoming new route to Amsterdam Schiphol. This announcement came in November as part of a broader long-haul push that sees the incorporation of Brussels and Cape Town into its global network.

As outlined in an interview with this publication last year, the company is excited about its new expansion, which is predicated on a “profitable and disciplined” growth strategy.

This week, the carrier’s frequencies to Amsterdam have now reached six weekly for when the route begins at the end of March. It was meant to be three weekly, at least that’s what the carrier had said when it first announced the new services.

Then, at the start of this year, it upped schedules to four weekly for the first month, moving to five weekly from 23 April.

This has been revised once more. It will begin with four weekly flights for the first month, moving to five weekly from the 18 April, and six weekly from 23 April.

Strong forward bookings are likely to have contributed to the carrier’s expansion of the route. Its other flights to Brussels remain at the previously announced three-weekly frequency.

Thai Airways adds daily Bangkok to Amsterdam route

Thai Airways has announced the resumption of its Bangkok to Amsterdam route. It will be returning to the Dutch capital from 1 July, with daily flights on an Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The airline last flew between the two cities 28 years ago, with a flight via Zurich.

It withdrew from the route due to heavy losses and competition, shifting capacity to Frankfurt and Munich instead. EVA Air currently flies thrice-weekly between Amsterdam and Bangkok, while KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flies on a daily basis.

In other words, competition remains intense. Thai Airways will likely cater to local demand from Thailand, as well as onward connections beyond Bangkok to its network across Southeast Asia and Australia.

Thai Airways also operates to nearby Brussels on a daily basis.
