UAE vertiport concept design unveiled by Skyports and LODD

Abu Dhabi-based LODD, which specialises in autonomous logistics and AI-powered drone technology and vertiport developer, Skyports have revealed a vertiport concept design to support the UAE’s advanced air mobility network. The unveiling took place during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO’s) Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) held in Abu Dhabi last week.
The strategic partnership aims to build vertiport infrastructure that will seamlessly connect key sites within Abu Dhabi, including a facility at Khalifa Port, which has been envisioned as a logistics hub, designed to enable seamless cargo deliveries with both manned and unmanned aircraft. Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports highlighted the importance of cargo transportation saying, “cargo is just as important to Abu Dhabi’s AAM future as passenger operations.”
A second vertiport development is also planned on Yas Island’s existing heliport, which will be upgraded to support passenger transport with both helicopters and eVTOLs. Additionally, Al Bateen has also been identified as a third location for the vertiport network. Walker emphasised, “the development of a comprehensive passenger and cargo network will enable us to bring wide ranging benefits to the Emirate, for both people and businesses.”
Rashid Al Mannai, CEO of LODD joined Walker for the MoU signing underscoring that building a vertiport network represents a significant step toward integrating uncrewed aerial mobility into Abu Dhabi’s public transportation system. He added that the designs stemmed from a four-month feasibility study and a clear vision for scalable air mobility operations.
“Abu Dhabi serves as a global model for air mobility, thanks to its progressive systems. These vertiports will lay the foundation for a future-ready air mobility network, supporting both commercial eVTOL passenger services and autonomous aerial logistics,” he concluded.
The feesiblity study, which involved more than 34 stakeholders and assessed 14 potential sites have already been submitted to the Abu Dhabi Government. Al Mannai anticipates that the government will issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the project by the end of February, with plans for the vertiport network to be developed within two years, pending the relevant approval and funding.
