Türkiye has officially unveiled its first indigenously developed turbofan engine

May 20, 2025

On 15 May 2025, TEI (TUSAŞ Engine Industries) published the first official image and technical specification of the TF35000, a new indigenous turbofan engine being developed to power Türkiye’s fifth-generation fighter aircraft, the Kaan.
Developed under the auspices of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) from 2018, the TF35000 has a target output of 35,000 pounds of static thrust. This would make it more powerful than the General Electric F110 variants used by early Kaans, and by the F-16 and F-15 (which are rated at up to 29,000 lb st). The new engine incorporates advanced features including high-temperature-resistant superalloys, advanced thermal barrier coatings, and innovative cooling technologies.
TEI has previously produced critical subsystems and components for foreign engines including the T700 turboshaft (used on Turkish Black Hawks and T129 ATAK helicopters) and has developed the TS1400 for indigenous rotorcraft.
