Singapore Airlines (SIA) has taken another step in its sustainability drive by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with climate technology firm Aether Fuels.

The agreement could see the airline sourcing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Aether once its production plants in the US and South East Asia become operational.

Under the deal, SIA intends to purchase SAF for an initial five-year period, with an option to extend for another five years.

The fuel will be blended with conventional jet fuel before being supplied to selected airports used by Singapore Airlines and its budget subsidiary, Scoot.

Aether’s fuel will be produced using waste carbon feedstock through its proprietary Aether Aurora technology, which promises lower costs, greater efficiency, and higher SAF yields than existing methods.

Lee Wen Fen, Chief Sustainability Officer, Singapore Airlines, said: “This partnership marks another step in the SIA Group’s journey towards our long-term decarbonisation goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“By collaborating with like-minded ecosystem partners such as Aether, we aim to accelerate and scale up the adoption of SAF in our flight operations, laying the groundwork for more sustainable air travel.”
