SIA to be first international airline at Sydney’s new airport

The upcoming Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), due to commence operations in 2026, has confirmed Singapore Airlines (SIA) as its first international carrier.
“This inaugural international airline arrangement is a fantastic milestone for Western Sydney International Airport and reflects the positive response we’ve had from airlines, especially in regard to the unprecedented opportunities our 24-hour capability unlocks,” commented WSI CEO Simon Hickey.
Hickey believes that the facility’s round-the-clock provision will unlock “unprecedented opportunities”, having so far received a “positive response” from airlines. “WSI’s late-night departure capacity, for instance, could allow Singapore Airlines’ business travellers to finish a full day’s work in Sydney, take an overnight flight and arrive in Singapore before their first morning meeting the very next day,” he added.
With the build of the airport now more than 80% progressed, “this is a unique opportunity to work with a greenfield airport to set a new base line for customer experience throughout an airport ecosystem,” added Singapore Airlines regional vice president South West Pacific, Louis Arul.
Construction of the new airport, designed to supplement capacity to Kingsford Smith Airport, commenced in 2018. The first stage is expected to be open in 2026.
