Iceland’s PLAY Airlines has confirmed that no cancellations or delays have been made to its flight schedule in the wake of the recent localised volcanic eruption on the country’s Reykjanes Peninsula.

“Indeed, in the last 400 days of volcanic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula, no PLAY flights have been cancelled” continued the airline, which added that Iceland has “some of the most advanced volcanic preparedness systems in the world to safeguard the public”.

“Though the area has been evacuated with road closures in effect around the eruption site, traffic to and from Keflavik International Airport is not affected by this event and there is no danger to people”. The airport is approximately 45km west of the volcanic activity,

The recent activity – the sixth time this year a volcano has erupted in the area – began on the night of 22 August, following several days of increased seismic activity and a series of earthquakes.  On 23 August, the Icelandic Meteorological Office issued an update that the seismicity was “fairly stable” with the main activity at the northern end of the eruptive fissure; something the Icelandic Coast Guard was continuing to monitor via surveillance flights. A further update informed that the intensity of the eruption had “decreased significantly” since the day prior.
