The Turkish low-cost carrier was named Global Environmental Sustainability Airline/ Airline Group of the Year at the CAPA – Centre for Aviation 2024 Environmental Sustainability Awards for Excellence awards.

Alongside Pegasus, Wizz, Scoot, Viva Aerobus and Frontier were also all named Environmental Sustainability Airline leaders for their regions during a presentation ceremony at the CAPA Airline Leader Summit held in Hong Kong on Tuesday 5 November. The airlines were all recognised for “demonstrating extensive commitment towards their own environmental sustainability initiatives, as well as supporting the industry’s wider goals” according to CAPA content & marketing director, Marco Navarria.

As the winner of the Global Environmental Sustainability Airline/ Airline Group of the Year award, Pegasus Airlines was highlighted for the rapid transformation of its sustainability performance. Simon Elsegood, CAPA – Centre for Aviation Head of Research, said the airline is a “global standout when it comes to highlighting just how much making sustainability initiatives a part of corporate culture and a decision-making driver can transform the performance of efficiency of an airline business.”

The past decade has seen the Turkish carrier grow from a small regional carrier into of the most successful low-cost carriers (LCCs) globally. At the same time as more than doubling passenger traffic and tripling its network the airline has rapidly upgraded its fleet with mostly A320neo and A321neo aircraft. It is also leading the way in terms of its performance around ‘Environment, Sustainability and Governance (ESG)’ initiatives making sustainability a strategic priority, committing to a 20% reduction in RPK emissions (compared to 2019) by 2030; targets around annual fuel efficiency; steps towards electrification of ground equipment; and increasing renewable energy use.

Pegasus Airlines CEO, Güliz Öztürk, said the award was a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication. “Working towards our industry’s net zero 2050 goal, we are pushing forward with strategic investments in next-generation aircraft, expanding our use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and embracing innovative technologies – each a vital pillar of our Climate Transition Roadmap.”

Pegasus’s fleet is currently comprised of 112 aircraft (92% of which are A320neo and A321neo aircraft). Fifty-two A321neos are scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2029.
