In their coverage of the shutdown of London’s Heathrow airport, media outlets Sky News and the Guardian newspaper made the same embarrassing mistake – both confusing Britain’s elite Special Air Services regiment (the SAS) with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), the national airline of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Scandinavian Airlines System, announced that ‘All our 12 round trips are so far cancelled to and from London Heathrow as the airport is currently closed.’

At 6.58 am, The Guardian’s live blog commented that: “The Special Air Service or SAS, has said that it also [sic] impacted by Heathrow’s closure.”

Sky News displayed the winged dagger badge of the SAS and ‘Who Dares Wins’ motto alongside text saying that: “The Special Air Service says all 12 of their round trips to and from Heathrow are cancelled.”

SAS (the airline) took to X (formerly Twitter) to correct them, writing: “We get it,

@SkyNews and The Guardian – same initials, both wear uniforms, operate internationally, and move fast. But only one SAS was affected by the Heathrow power outage. Spoiler: it was the one with the free coffee onboard, not the one with parachutes.”
