Lufthansa is planning to take over ground handling operations for some of its flights at Munich Airport later this year.

The airline is looking to acquire full control of Swissport Losch, a company currently handling ground services at the airport, from its existing owners, Swissport Cargo Services Deutschland and Losch Airport Service München.

The deal is still subject to regulatory approval, including antitrust clearance and the granting of an operating license.

If approved, the acquisition would allow Lufthansa to manage its own ground services at Munich, aiming to improve efficiency and reliability for passengers.

Lufthansa has said it intends to retain all existing Swissport Losch employees and offer them long-term job security. The current owners will remain involved in an advisory role to assist with the transition.

“Securing jobs at Munich Airport and further developing the travel experience for our customers are of great importance to Lufthansa. Swissport Losch is a strong company with a long-standing partnership with Lufthansa. The company has outstanding employees who are characterized above all by their professionalism, commitment and service quality,” said Jens Ritter, CEO Lufthansa Airlines and Hub Manager Munich.

“The future of Swissport Losch and its employees in Munich is very important to us. We are pleased that we can offer our employees a secure future with this perspective,” said Marc Losch, CEO Losch Airport Service.

“We are proud to support Lufthansa in the transition to their self-handling setup on the basis of our long-term partnership with the Lufthansa Group at Munich Airport. Our global expertise, particularly at major aviation hubs, will contribute to the operational stability and the takeover of Swissport Losch by Lufthansa provides exciting prospects for Munich’s talented ground service professionals,” added Warwick Brady, president and CEO of Swissport International.
