London Stansted is to benefit from a five-year £1.1 billion investment programme, with a £600 million terminal extension to help enable the airport to serve up to 43 million passenger a year.

Announced at the UK government’s International Investment Summit, details of the project build on planning permission secured last October and follow the airport reporting record-breaking passenger numbers for each month in 2024.

“We are unique among major airports in operating a single terminal, which means we can give people a simple, efficient and seamless experience,” explained London Stansted managing director Gareth Powell. “These exciting plans mean we are able to retain all those benefits, while introducing an array of new facilities and giving us the space we need to grow”.

Powell added that although the new amenities and expanded spaces will add “more space, choice, comfort and range of services on offer,” he believe that the airport will maintain “the ease, simplicity and original concept design of [its] fantastic terminal building” – something which commenced construction in 1986 and was formally opened in 1991.

Among the improvements include three bays added to the back of the existing terminal building, expending it by over 16 thousand square metres, allowing an enlarged immigration hall to move from its current location; freeing up space for a bigger departure lounge and larger baggage carousels. Flooring, seating and facilities upgrades will also complement the new experience, with around 5,000 new onsite jobs created.

Also included in the investment programme will be an airfield taxiway upgrade and a 14.3MW on-site solar farm to supply future and current energy needs.
