Embraer has been recognised for its contribution to scientific or technological innovation.

The plane-maker was awarded the von Karman Award for International Cooperation in Aeronautics from the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS), in a ceremony held during the 34th Congress of the ICAS in Florence, Italy 9-13 September.

The award established in 1980 has the purpose of acknowledging exceptional technical achievement, scientific or technological advance or benefit to society via international cooperation in the field of aeronautics.

This year’s award highlighted Embraer’s technological development in the area of “Aeroelastic Tailoring”. Aeroelastic tailoring has been described as “the embodiment of directional stiffness into an aircraft structural design to control aeroelastic deformation, static or dynamic, in such a fashion as to affect the aerodynamic and structural performance of that aircraft in a beneficial way.”

Specifically, the Embraer project looked at the challenges around using composite structures, and the validation of methods for developing efficient, light and low emission aircraft design.

“It is an honour to attend this event and witness our team and partners being awarded for the Aeroelastic Tailoring Cooperation programme,” said Cleiton Silva, VP of Technology and Advanced Projects at Embraer.

“This initiative has united our talented team with the global scientific community to create innovative theories, computational methods, and experimental procedures focused on advancing sustainable aviation.”
