Dubai Airports sets benchmark for accessible travel with Assisted Travel Lounge to address the diverse needs of People of Determination (POD).

Located in Terminal 2 at Dubai International (DXB), the lounge is designed to offer a safe, comfortable space and accommodate the needs of passengers travelling with hidden disabilities, such as autism.

The result of a collaboration with dnata, the lounge is part of a multi-million-dirham programme with plans already in place to open additional lounges in other terminals.

Majed al Joker, chief operating officer at Dubai Airports said the lounge reflects DXB’s dedication to ensuring it offers a welcoming space for all passengers. “It is a unique facility, meticulously designed to align with Dubai’s vision of being a truly inclusive city for all. It ensures that every detail, from the ambience to the furniture, contributes to a calm and accessible environment and is a major leap forward in our mission to create a seamless travel experience for all guests, regardless of their individual needs,” he said.

Inside, the lounge features designated wheelchair areas, tactile surfaces and dedicated seating for the hearing-impaired that facilitates face-to-face communication with staff. There is also a decompression zone for individuals with autism and an area for unaccompanied minors. Dubai Airports sought guidance from the Dubai Universal Design Code when designing the lounge.

According to Jaffar Dawood dnata’s SVP, airport operations, UAE and MEA, the lounge marks an important milestone in providing additional care and comfort for people of determination. “Our experienced, highly trained team will make every effort to deliver an exceptional experience for all visitors,” he said.

In addition to the lounge, DXB offers a hidden disability service training programme for its airport employees, as well as dedicated wheelchair and taxi services.
