Crystal Cabin Awards: Top 3 aircraft interiors concepts that would make flying far more comfortable
February 18, 2026
The Crystal Cabin Awards have published the list of 2026 finalists, featuring the three most innovative aircraft interiors concepts across eight categories: accessibility, cabin concepts, passenger comfort, cabin technologies, in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC)/digital services, sustainability, breakthrough start-ups, and university submissions.
The Awards published a shortlist of 85 candidates in December, and the list was narrowed to 24 finalists by an expert panel of judges.
Three aircraft interiors designs that enhance passenger comfort
In the aircraft cabin, passenger expectations are driving the development of new comfort solutions. The three finalists in the passenger comfort category focus on enhancing the cabin environment from the front to the very back of the plane. They introduce improved ergonomics and optimal space utilisation, ensuring passenger experience flexibility and a connection to life on the ground.
Airbus presents the Airspace A350-1000 first class cabin concept
Airbus was selected as a finalist in the passenger comfort category for its new Airspace A350 first-class cabin concept.
This vision for the A350-1000 is an evolution toward an exclusive first-class experience, similar to flying on a private jet. It transforms the highest premium cabin into a sky-high private apartment.
A new master suite, located at the centre of the cabin just behind door 1, offers up to two travellers a double bed, a private lavatory, a changing area, and a bar, so they never need to leave the comfortable cocoon during the flight.

It is a spacious, luxurious private suite with high ceilings. To avoid a sense of confinement, virtual panoramic windows wrap around the suite, streaming images from cameras outside the aircraft, and offering an ever-changing view of the skies.
BMW Designworks presents SPACEFRAME to improve economy class
SPACEFRAME, developed by BMW Designworks, is a modular, economy class seat system that delivers greater passenger comfort through a space-efficient, flexible layout. An ergonomic mesh backrest with foam lumbar zones supports a more comfortable seating posture for longer journeys. A forward-sliding recline allows passengers to rest without encroaching on the personal space of others seated behind them.

To help keep economy class passengers connected and productive in flight, the seat features integrated power, lighting, and wireless charging—a power capability currently available only in premium cabins. Its modular architecture would allow airlines to customise the seat to suit their brand, including a variety of in-flight entertainment options, while also simplifying maintenance.
The SPACEFRAME is also green, supporting airlines’ efforts toward a Net Zero cabin footprint by 2050 through its lightweight design, which reduces fuel consumption. It also employs sustainable materials and is fully recyclable
Collins Aerospace wraps up the three finalists in passenger comfort with its restful economy class SkyNook
Collins Aerospace has been named a Crystal Cabin Award finalist for passenger comfort with its SkyNook, a semi-private retreat from the strain of long-haul travel, tailored for economy class passengers who need additional accommodations, including families travelling together, passengers with disabilities, and those with sensory sensitivities.

It would be located in the aft cabin of a widebody aircraft, a space that is often underutilised because it tapers inward, reducing seating capacity. With Collins’ SkyNook solution, the space can be converted into an economy-class suite that accommodates a car seat, bassinet, pet carrier, or service animal during the flight.

The suite is ideal for families, travellers with service animals or pets, individuals with sensory sensitivities, and those flying with fragile or bulky carry-on items.

A deployable privacy divider would reduce cabin noise and provide a visual barrier from the aisle, thereby avoiding visibility of lavatory queues and galley traffic. Passengers in the SkyNook can take advantage of the seclusion it affords to feed and comfort children, or they can simply relax in a more peaceful environment.

The Crystal Cabin Award judges will select the winners in a final vote during the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg, which runs from April 14-16. Trophies are handed out at a gala ceremony on the evening of April 14 during AIX.
