China Eastern Airlines has become the first airline to operate a Comac C919 on an international route, marking a significant milestone for the Chinese-built aircraft.
The carrier announced on New Year’s Day that it deployed the C919 on its Shanghai to Hong Kong service, a key route linking two of Asia’s major hubs.
The flight represents the first time the C919, developed by Chinese aerospace manufacturer Comac, has been used for scheduled commercial operations to Hong Kong.
The C919’s entry into international service is a important moment not just for China Eastern but also for the broader Chinese aviation industry.
As the first airline to adopt the C919, China Eastern has been instrumental in its early commercial success. The aircraft, designed for medium-haul routes, is part of China’s strategy to increase self-reliance in aviation technology and reduce dependence on foreign-made aircraft.
