In the wake of US airstrikes on Iran in the early hours of Sunday 22 June, British Airways and Singapore Airlines have temporarily suspended flights to Dubai and Qatar.

British Airways confirmed that its flights from London Heathrow to and from both Dubai and Doha have been cancelled temporarily. The airline is monitoring the situation and will decide whether to reinstate services on Monday 23 June.

BA 109 rerouted back to Zurich following US attack

The decision to suspend flights comes after a Dubai-bound British Airways flight BA 109 from London Heathrow on Saturday 21 June was diverted to Zurich. After flying for around nine hours and just 90 minutes before its scheduled arrival in Dubai, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was diverted back to Switzerland.

With all three BA departures from London Heathrow on Sunday 22 June cancelled, around 1,000 British Airways passengers were reportedly left waiting in Dubai to return home. The airline also cancelled its flight from London Heathrow to Doha on Sunday evening.

The British flag-carrier is offering a flexible booking policy for customers already booked on flights to Dubai and Doha between Sunday and Tuesday 24 June, and who would like to adjust their dates of travel.

Singapore Airlines also suspends Dubai service

Singapore Airlines (SIA) also cancelled two flights scheduled to fly in and out of Dubai on Sunday “following a security assessment of the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.”

A statement from the airline said it will be contacting all affected customers to inform them about the cancellations. Customers will be rebooked on alternative flights or can seek a full refund.

The statement also read that “as the situation remains fluid, other SIA flights between Singapore and Dubai may be affected.”

Meanwhile Emirates which flies to multiple airports in the UK, including London Heathrow, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester is currently operating all routes between Dubai and the UK.

However, a statement on the Emirates website said: “Customers connecting through Dubai with final destinations in Iraq and Iran will not be accepted for travel at their point of origin until further notice.”

It also said: “Customers departing or arriving at Dubai International Airport are advised to check their flight statue on emirates.com for the latest information.”

Dubai-based carrier flydubai has also confirmed that its flight schedule continues to be impacted by the ongoing situation in the region. Flights to four nations – Iran, Iraq, Israel and Syria – are currently suspended until 30 June.

Similarly, Etihad’s flights between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv, Israel had already been cancelled up to Monday 30 June. The airline released a statement saying: “This remains an evolving situation, and further changes or disruptions may occur. Etihad continues to monitor developments closely in coordination with the relevant authorities.”
