Australian SAF company Wagner Sustainable Fuels has received an undisclosed amount of investment from Boeing to help facilitate the development of its production facility in Brisbane.

“The investment from the Queensland Government and Boeing will underpin Australia’s first, fully integrated SAF production facility,” confirmed Wagner Sustainable Fuels CEO Matt Doyle.

Building on an earlier collaboration agreement agreed in April 2024, Boeing’s investment will support an engineering study for the eventual construction of a SAF refinery; converting ethanol from waste-based feedstocks (such as industrial waste) into SAF. “The combination of our platform with the front-end of LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology makes it possible to create SAF supply in Australia using local waste streams, further supporting this country’s energy security,” commented Jimmy Samartizis, CEO of LanzaJet.

Boeing’s sustainability lead for Australia and New Lealand Kimmberly Cammrass added that the new plant “will make a real difference in developing a SAF industry in Australia,” something vital to support the nation’s own climate goals as well as the aviation industry’s net zero ambitions.

She added that as Australia currently imports 90% of its liquid fuel (including jet fuel) – with demand expected to increase by 75% towards 2050 – SAF facilities such as Wagner’s new Brisbane site will help support national fuel security.
