BA announces carbon removals partnerships
British Airways has committed to purchasing over £9 million in carbon removal credits through a six-year deal aimed at advancing its climate action strategy.
The agreement is part of the airline’s broader push to enhance its environmental sustainability and reduce its carbon footprint by 2030.
One initiative in Scotland involves capturing CO2 emissions from whisky distilleries and converting them into sustainable building materials.
Another UK-based project uses an innovative method known as enhanced rock weathering, which locks carbon in minerals for thousands of years.
In addition, the airline has invested in reforestation efforts across Scotland and Wales, purchasing credits from companies dedicated to long-lasting forest restoration.
The airline’s portfolio extends beyond the UK, including Canadian projects that focus on removing carbon from rivers and oceans using alkaline rock particles. In India, British Airways is supporting a biochar initiative that not only captures carbon but also improves soil health and supports female farmers.
British Airways has partnered with CUR8, a UK firm specialising in carbon removal credits, acquiring 33,000 tonnes of credits through their portfolio.
The move is seen as a crucial step in scaling up the carbon removal sector, which scientists and policymakers recognise as essential to tackling climate change.
