All Nippon Airways (ANA) has become the first airline in Asia to introduce AeroSHARK technology to its Boeing 777 passenger aircraft, in its drive for greater operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Starting last week, a Boeing 777-300ER fitted with the innovative riblet film will enter commercial service with the Japanese carrier.

The move follows ANA’s earlier adoption of AeroSHARK on a Boeing 777 freighter, which has been in service since September 2024. With this latest rollout, ANA also becomes the first airline globally to operate Boeing 777s with the fuel-saving technology across both cargo and passenger fleets.

AeroSHARK, developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, is a special film modelled after sharkskin that reduces aerodynamic drag, cutting fuel consumption and carbon emissions. ANA’s in-service testing confirmed that the technology can deliver a reduction in fuel burn and emissions of around 1%.

“The implementation of the AeroSHARK technology on more ANA aircraft represents our ongoing commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and improve operational efficiency,” said Kohei Tsuji, executive vice president, engineering and maintenance center at ANA.

“This innovative technology is building a more sustainable future for ANA and the aviation industry.”

Lufthansa Technik welcomed the collaboration, with Joern Dahmen, senior director special engineering services, commenting: “ANA’s implementation of AeroSHARK on both freighter and passenger aircraft highlights the potential of retrofitting existing fleets to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. We are proud to support ANA in their efforts to enhance operational efficiency and contribute to more sustainable aviation.”
