Air France-KLM has struck a significant agreement with TotalEnergies to secure up to 1.5 million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over the next decade.

The deal, which will run until 2035, represents one of the largest SAF procurement contracts in the airline group’s history.

The use of SAF is seen as a crucial component in the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Derived from waste materials and residues, SAF can deliver a reduction in carbon emissions of between 75% and 90% over its lifecycle compared to traditional fossil fuels.

This cleaner alternative supports both the industry’s transition towards greener practices and helps countries meet their environmental targets.

The agreement builds on a 2022 memorandum of understanding for the supply of 800,000 tonnes of SAF.

Air France-KLM has been a global leader in the adoption of SAF, accounting for 17% and 16% of global SAF usage in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

By 2030, the airline group is targeting a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre compared with 2019 levels.

The SAF provided by TotalEnergies will be used across Air France-KLM’s network, including flights departing from France, the Netherlands, and other European countries.
