The Do228 NXT makes international debut at Farnborough Airshow
The latest evolution of the Dornier Do228 has made its international debut at the Farnborough International Airshow, marking the first time the new Do228 NXT has travelled beyond Germany.
Built by General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS), the aircraft combines the familiar design of the long-serving twin-engine turboprop with updated avionics, systems and production processes intended to carry the platform into a new generation.
The Do228 has been operating around the world for more than four decades, serving passenger airlines, cargo operators, governments and military customers. Rather than replacing that proven foundation, GA-ATS has focused on modernising the aircraft while retaining the characteristics that have supported its longevity.
“The NXT is a new and an old plane,” Martina from GA-ATS told Aerospace Global News at Farnborough. “The basis is old. It’s a proven aircraft flying for decades all over the world. The new thing is that we changed quite a lot.”
Do 228 production returns to Germany
Alongside updates to the avionics, systems and interior, GA-ATS has brought more of the Do228 manufacturing process back in-house.
Wing and flight control production is now being undertaken at the company’s facility in Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich. GA-ATS sees this renewed control over key parts of the manufacturing process as an important part of securing the aircraft’s future.
Production will be increased gradually as the new line matures. The company plans to begin at a rate of three aircraft before moving to five and eventually up to 10.

GA-ATS is targeting a broad market with the Do 228 NXT. Potential civil applications include passenger transport, cargo operations and parachuting, while government and military variants can be equipped for maritime patrol and other special missions.
The aircraft retains the five-blade propellers introduced during the earlier transition from the classic Do 228 to the Do 228 NG. According to GA-ATS, the configuration has already proved its value in reducing noise and improving fuel consumption.
Farnborough brings the Do 228 NXT to new customers
Bringing the aircraft to Farnborough has allowed prospective customers and suppliers to inspect the Do 228 NXT in person for the first time outside Germany.
“For us, a successful airshow here in Farnborough is that we can show this aircraft,” Martina said. “We have a lot of customers here, a lot of potential customers, but also suppliers who now have the chance to see this aircraft.”
Its Farnborough appearance represents more than an overseas outing for the demonstrator. It signals GA-ATS’ intention to reintroduce the enduring Do 228 to international operators as a modern, versatile aircraft with decades of proven service behind it.
