Airbus and Vietjet agreed a deal for 100-single-aisle A321neo aircraft during the Paris Air Show.

The agreement includes the potential to acquire an additional 50 of the aircraft type in the future.

Today was not an official contract signing, but was a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the parties. It builds on a long-standing partnership between the French manufacturer and Vietnamese carrier.

“Today marks an important milestone in our ongoing collaboration with Vietjet,” said Benoit de Saint-Exupery, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business. “It’s a journey that started 12 years ago in 2013 with an order for 63 aircraft.”

Vietjet’s all-Airbus operation

Vietjet currently operates an all-Airbus fleet of 115 aircraft. The deal agreed on Tuesday morning builds on an order placed just a few weeks ago in Hanoi for 20 A330neos to complement an order for 20 of the same aircraft type made in Singapore last year.

The addition of A321neos and A330s “is perfect for Vietjet to continue spreading its wings, efficiently matching capacity more closely to demand across its network.,” says Saint Exupery. “The airline will also benefit from the high levels of technical commonality that are unique to the latest generation of Airbus aircraft.”

“Today we are honoued to announce the next milestone – an order for 100 A321neos with 50 additional options, bringing the total to 150 aircraft,“ said Ng Thi Phuong Thao, chairwoman Vietjet. She noted that the order is expected to be one of the biggest at this year’s show.

Vietnam: A regional aviation hub

In line with Vietnam’s GDP projected to grow by 8% this year and double digit growth anticipated for next year, Thao added: “I have a dream and I’m well prepared for it to transform Vietnam into a regional aviation aviation hub for passenger transport, MRO services, logistics, training, research, global supply chains and aviation infrastructure.”

She added that the decision to choose the fuel efficient A321neo and A330neo, “reaffirms Vietjet’s long-term commitment to a greener, more efficient and deeply accountable aviation future… A new journey for Viejet has offiically begun.”

The order is also expected to generate thousands of high-quality jobs across Europe.
