Back to the future: Transavia celebrates 60 years with retro-liveried A321neo

The aircraft is due to arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Friday 25 July, becoming the twelfth Airbus to join the Dutch leisure carrier’s growing fleet.

Transavia is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary later this month with the delivery of a special Airbus A321neo featuring a retro livery inspired by the airline’s early years.

The aircraft is due to arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Friday 25 July, becoming the twelfth Airbus to join the Dutch leisure carrier’s growing fleet.

The aircraft, registered PH-YHD, will make its ferry flight to the Netherlands under the flight number HV 1965 – a nod to the year Transavia was founded.

The flight is expected to land at Schiphol in the afternoon and will be ready for immediate service, although its debut route has yet to be announced.

The livery design, originally created in 1966 by Dutch designer Thijs Postma, was one of Transavia’s first official brand identities.

Now, it returns in a modern form on the latest-generation A321neo, linking the airline’s past with its future.

Sixty years of Transavia

“For sixty years, we have been connecting people with beautiful destinations for both holidays and visits to friends and family abroad,” said Marcel de Nooijer, CEO of Transavia.

“That role will remain important, now and in the future. That is why we are investing in a fleet that is quieter, cleaner and more economical.

“The arrival of new Airbuses, including the retro livery, shows how we are looking ahead with the same entrepreneurial spirit with which we once started.”

The airline’s ongoing fleet renewal strategy focuses on replacing older Boeing aircraft with Airbus A321neo jets as part of a broader effort to cut emissions and improve operational efficiency.

This summer, Transavia will receive a second A321neo, increasing the Airbus fleet to twelve.

By the end of this year, that will rise to 14. At the same time, older Boeing 737s are leaving the fleet.

In 2024, four 737-700s were retired. On Friday 20 June, the first Boeing 737-800 also left.

This aircraft was flown to St. Athan in Wales, where it is being dismantled.

Four more 737-800s will follow later this year.

The transition from Boeing to Airbus will be completed in 2031.
