Strong foundations for Eindhoven airport expansion

With the first foundation piles for the expansion of The Netherlands’ Eindhoven Airport in the ground, construction work is underway in a transformation process expected to take around two and a half years to complete.

Construction work is underway at Eindhoven Airport in a substantial terminal expansion, with the facility to stay open throughout the majority of the two and a half year transformation.

With the final vision for the airport unveiled in March 2024, construction is scheduled to be completed in July 2027. When complete, the current airside terminal will be enlarged by approximately 10,000 square metres, creating more space for gates and the non-Shengen area. The pre-security landside area will also be expanded by a further 2,000 square metres. Underground modifications will also include a baggage basement.

With the current terminal considerably over capacity for the passenger numbers it was designed for – with around 6.8 million travellers using the airport in 2023 – the expansion will be crucial to future growth. Crucially, the larger arrivals hall will allow more flights to disembark simultaneously; described by Eindhoven as “a major need since no scheduled flights are operated after 11pm”.

Following the official ‘start of construction’ ceremony held in November 2024, the ongoing installation of around 380 foundation piles, the longest around 19m long, is expected to last until around the end of January. Although the airport notes the “objective is for the construction to cause as little disruption as possible to passengers, visitors and employees” – with the site to remain operational throughout the majority of work – it concludes that “the planning of the work is aligned with the anticipated temporary closure due to runway work in 2027”.
