Serco, the international provider of services to governments, has been awarded a new contract by the UK’s Ministry of Defence valued at c.£32m to maintain Air Defence radars and provide the day to day operation of Remote Radar Heads for the next five years. Serco will be the prime contractor for the new contract with Lockheed Martin as the main sub-contractor.

The contract covers five radar sites at Brizlee Wood, Northumberland; Saxa Vord, Shetland Isles; Buchan, Eastern Scotland; Benbecula, Western Scotland and Neatishead, Norfolk. The contract includes a personnel replacement programme for the Royal Air Force and employs over 30 people.

Commenting on the award, Doug Umbers, managing director of Serco’s UK Defence business, said: “Serco has a long and proud history of supporting radars in the UK and we are delighted to have been awarded this new contract to ensure the availability and readiness of this element of the United Kingdom’s critical national infrastructure.”

Serco has been providing support as a sub-contractor to Lockheed Martin for United Kingdom Air Defence systems since 2005 and more recently Serco delivered three new TPS-77 Air Defence radars to the UK Ministry of Defence.
