Rolls-Royce secures five-year Typhoon engine support deal with UK MOD

May 8, 2025

Rolls-Royce has signed a five-year contract with the UK Ministry of Defence to continue supporting the EJ200 engines that power the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon aircraft. Known as the Typhoon Engine Support Solution (TESS), the agreement will cover maintenance and repair of 130 engines and directly support around 200 highly skilled jobs, primarily based at Rolls-Royce’s UK Defence headquarters in Bristol.
The TESS contract, awarded by Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), reinforces the resilience of the UK’s defence supply chain, sustaining up to 2,400 jobs across the country. It also plays a key role in maintaining the UK’s edge in combat air capabilities, bridging current Typhoon operations with future programmes like the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).
Defence Secretary John Healey praised the agreement, stating:
“Not only will this contract help to maintain our world-class jets, it also delivers on our Plan for Change by securing around 200 jobs in the UK and boosting the skills base our world-leading defence industry relies upon.”
Adam Riddle, President – Defence at Rolls-Royce, highlighted the strategic importance of the deal:
“The Typhoon Engine Support Solution represents a continuation of our support of the EJ200 engine and we’re glad for the ongoing confidence in our team and capabilities. This investment enables us and our supply chain to ensure the Royal Air Force can execute their missions effectively in an increasingly complex global environment.”
The Bristol site, where most of the work will take place, is a hub for military power and propulsion development. Technologies developed under TESS will feed into GCAP and other advanced programmes, with 80% of innovations having dual-use potential for civil applications, underscoring the broader industrial benefits of defence investment.
Lyndon Hoyle, Typhoon Delivery Team Head at DE&S, added:
“This contract not only ensures the continued availability of the Typhoon fleet, it helps drive growth and prosperity within UK Defence, reinforcing our dedication to procuring capability that equips our armed forces with competitive edge now and in the future.”
With operations spanning 100 countries and exports making up 80% of its UK production, Rolls-Royce remains one of the nation’s largest exporters and a critical partner in advancing UK aerospace and defence leadership globally.
