Qatar Airways is the launch customer for Mammoth’s B777-200LRMF freighter conversion

May 6, 2025

Bill Tarpley, the CEO of Mammoth greeted the flight, saying that: “This milestone is the culmination of years of dedicated engineering, collaboration, and innovation. Our mission is to deliver one of the world’s most productive and economical long-range freighters, and today’s achievement is a testament to the hard work and expertise of our entire team and partners.”
Mammoth also announced that Qatar Airways will be the launch customer for its B777-200LRMF conversion programme, having signed an agreement with lessor Jetran for five B777-200LRMFs.
Over the next 20 years, it has been estimated that the air cargo market will require more than 2,600 freighter aircraft, of which 1,000 will be large widebodies. Mammoth believe that the 777 is well-suited to gain a commanding portion of this part of the market thanks to their superior operating economics, highly fuel efficient engines and other features.
Mammoth Freighters LLC was founded in December 2020 specifically to design, develop, convert, and support the development of passenger to freighter conversions. The company’s initial focus is on the Boeing 777 (both the 200 LR and 300 ER variants). The Mammoth-converted 777 promises to be one of the most productive and economical 777 long range freighters in the world, the company says, with a large main deck cargo door that is designed to be 16 inches wider than that of the Boeing-built 777F.
The freighter will be converted and certified under an amended STC, with both the 200LR and 300ER included under one project number. The Model 777-200LR is considered to be the Master STC, which will then be amended to add the Mammoth 777-300ER variant. This will follow about six months later.
Mammoth Freighters launched its conversion programme for the B777-300ER and B777-200LR at the end of 2020. Cargojet became the launch customer for Mammoth’s B777-200LR freighter conversion programme in November 2021, while leasing firm AviaAM Leasing was revealed as the launch customer for Mammoth’s 777-300ER (ERMF) freighter conversion programme in 2022, after it signed up for six of the aircraft.
Mammoth is backed by private investment funds managed by Fortress Investment Group LLC and its affiliates. Mammoth is based in Fort Worth, Texas with engineering offices in Rancho Bernardo, California and Seattle, Washington.
Mammoth, a Boeing Licensee for the Boeing 777, is developing a global production and conversion site network which will include its Fort Worth-based Aspire MRO Facility as well as additional conversion capacity planned with STS Aviation Services UK in Manchester and at two other sites around the world.
Mammoth reached an agreement for 777-200LR and -300ER conversion work with STS in Manchester in 2022. An ex-Delta Air Lines -200LR was delivered to STS Aviation Services in June 2024.
Mammoth aimed to have its first conversion certified and delivered by the end of 2023 but this has now slipped to the end of this year.
Mammoth currently has orders and commitments for 35 conversions, and has five B777s under conversion with Aspire and two with STS. Confirmed customers so far include lessor Jetran, DHL (which has placed an order for nine B772LRMF freighter conversions for delivery between 2024 and 2027) and Saudia.
