Bordered by Suriname to the west and Brazil to the east and south, French Guiana is an overseas department and region of France located on the northern coast of South America. It is a part of the European Union, and its official currency is the euro.

French Guiana is the host of France’s main spaceport, and has a nascent but growing tourist industry. Operation Kapalu was launched to combat illegal gold mining, and has seen a large scale commitment of French Army and Gendarmerie forces (including Fennec helicopters), who have dismantled illegal sites, seized equipment and prevented any reoccupation by illegal gold miners.

The operation, which protected French interests and Amazonian biodiversity, has now been declared to be over, after the seizure of more than one million euros of gold, and with large amounts of miners’ equipment destroyed. This will now not be used to enrich criminal networks.
