MTU Aero Engines has announced the acquisition of Hamburg-based 3D.aero, a specialist in automation and measurement technology.

The move brings 3D.aero’s expertise in cutting-edge sensor solutions under MTU’s wing, enhancing the company’s capabilities in high-precision surface inspection, painting automation, and advanced system engineering for the aviation industry.

The 3D.aero team, consisting of approximately 40 specialists, has carved out a reputation for innovation in sensor technology and automation processes.

Their expertise is particularly valuable in areas such as automated surface inspection, a critical aspect of quality assurance in aerospace manufacturing.

The company’s painting automation solutions further extend to other industries, including construction and agricultural machinery, commercial vehicles, rail transport, and general mechanical engineering.

While 3D.aero will continue to operate as an independent entity in these non-aviation sectors, the acquisition signals a significant strengthening of MTU Aero Engines’ technological portfolio.

“In the past years, MTU and 3D.aero have pooled their technological know-how and innovative strength and successfully implemented projects together. That saves MTU and its customers time and hence money, especially in maintenance. It therefore simply makes sense to keep this expertise within the company permanently,” said Michael Schreyögg, chief programme officer at MTU Aero Engines.
