Mitsubishi has signed a pilot contract with Raytheon to repair transmitters used in US F-15 fighter radars, the first time it is to repair US government military equipment.

Under the new agreement, Raytheon will “verify Mitsubishi Electric’s repair capabilities with the expectation of eventually contracting with Mitsubishi Electric for such services in the future,” notes the Japanese company.

The contract was signed in cooperation with the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD), the Acquisition, technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA), and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).

The contract to repair components in systems operated by the US Air Force (USAF) and its allied forces builds on twenty years of Mitsubishi Electric’s domestic support services. In 2004, Mutsibushi Electric first obtained a Manufacturing License Agreement with Raytheon to produce and repair AN/APG-63 (V)1 radars operated by the JASDF.

This latest agreement also builds on the Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology set out by the Japanese government in 2014, with Mitsubishi Electric concluding that it is “committed to strengthening the Japan-US security alliance by participating in the repair of US military equipment”.
