MagniX has unveiled what it dubs its “game-changing battery,” a product line called Samson, which has been designed for “aviation and industries or applications that require high levels of performance, safety, and reliability”.

The combination of Samson batteries with magniX’s flight-proven electric engines now provides customers with a fully electric powertrain, with CEO of magniX CEO describing this first offering as “just the beginning;” adding that “the roadmap to an energy density of 400 [Watt hours per kg] is looking very promising”.

The modular magniX Sanson300 (the first in the company’s battery product line) has a design focused on maximising energy density, offering 300 Watt hours per kg, with a battery cycle life of over 1,000 full-depth discharge cycles. VP of energy storage systems and the NASA electric powertrain flight demonstration programme at magniX Ben Loxton described the new offering as “a breakthrough for magniX and electric aviation,” something that could enable “many eVTOLs and electric programmes on the edge of viability to become viable”.

With aviation-specific requirements in mind, the magniX batteries include active on-ground cooling during charging and the option for passive cooling in flight. Patented safety technologies include cell level protections from thermal runaway and the ability to store batteries for long periods at zero charge.
