The Kazakhstan Air Force (Qazaqstannıñ Äwe Qorğanısı Küşteri) recently received six brand new Su-30SM aircraft.

The Su30SM is an upgraded two-seat multi-role derivative of the Su-27 ‘Flanker’ built by the Irkut Aircraft Production Organisation (IAPO), and is one of the types currently being used by the Russian Aerospace Forces in support of the illegal and barbaric invasion of Ukraine. IAPO-built Su-30 series aircraft have been delivered to the Algerian Air Force, the Angolan Air Force, the Armenian Air Force, the Belarusian Air Force, the Indian Air Force (IAF), and the Royal Malaysian Air Force, as well as the Kazakh Air Force.

Su-30 variants are also produced by KnAAPO at Komsomolsk, and these have been delivered to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force and People’s Liberation Army Naval Air Force, the Indonesian Air Force, the Ugandan Air Force, the Venezuelan Air Force and the Vietnam People’s Air Force..

The new Su-30SMs were delivered to unit 55652 at 602 Air Base, Shymkent, to replace Kazakhstan’s last fifteen MiG-29s – which were sold for scrap on 28 November 2023. They will join 12 Su-30SMs already in the inventory and delivered from December 2018.
