Hong Kong starts three-runway operation
November 30, 2024
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has launched its highly anticipated three-runway system (3RS), marking a significant step in the city’s aviation ambitions.
From today, all three runways will operate simultaneously, boosting HKIA’s capacity and solidifying Hong Kong’s position as a key global aviation hub.
The expanded airport aims to handle 120 million passengers and 10 million tonnes of cargo annually within the next decade, reflecting its pivotal role in connecting Asia with the rest of the world.
The commissioning ceremony, held at HKIA, was attended by Hong Kong Chief Executive John KC Lee and senior representatives from mainland China’s transport and aviation authorities, including Fred Lam, chairman of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).
Construction of the third runway began in 2016, with the new north runway becoming operational in 2022. Subsequent reconfiguration of the centre runway included upgrading taxiways and ensuring seamless integration with the expanded airfield. The airport’s increased capacity is expected to ramp up gradually in line with demand.
John KC Lee said: “This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the PRC. The three-runway system of HKIA has been completed and is now in operation, carrying passengers from around the country and cargo to more destinations, and providing more options for global passenger and cargo flow into the Mainland, which is particularly significant.
“HKIA is an important gateway to the world for Hong Kong and the entire Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, playing a strategic role in social and economic development.”
Fred Lam added: “The 3RS will significantly enhance the overall capacity of the airport, further expanding our extensive air traffic network and consolidating our position as an international aviation hub.
“The commissioning of the 3RS will provide impetus for the Airport City development and support Hong Kong’s economic growth.
“Leveraging Hong Kong’s unique strengths, the Airport City will be a world-leading new landmark, attracting visitors from all around the world and driving Hong Kong’s economic development.”
