Google has launched Flight Deals, a new Gemini AI-powered flight search tool, which will make it easier for travellers to find affordable airfare using natural language. The feature is accessible on the Google Flights homepage and on a dedicated Flight Deals page.

It is now available in beta within Google Flights for users in the United States, Canada, and India.

Google Flights functions as a metasearch tool and redirects users to airline websites or OTAs when it’s time to book, with a price comparison between them. Consumers are free to pick which they prefer.

Google’s Gemini AI-powered flight search

Relying on Google’s Gemini AI assistant, Flight Deals allows travellers to describe their ideal trip in natural language. For example, a user can type a query such as “a week-long winter trip to a city with great food, nonstop only”, and the AI will generate relevant flight options.

“What makes Flight Deals unique is that it uses Google’s advanced AI to understand the nuances of what you’re looking for and identify matching destinations,” Google said in its announcement. “Then, it’ll tap into real-time Google Flights data to quickly show you relevant, up-to-date options from hundreds of airlines and booking sites.”

Google’s Gemini AI model integrates real-time data from hundreds of airlines and booking platforms. Search results are prioritised by potential savings—first by percentage discount, then by absolute price—making it easier for travellers to spot the best-value options.

Flight Deals for flexible travellers

Google says the new tool is most useful for passengers who are flexible on dates or destinations. Instead of manually adjusting filters or searching multiple times, users can let the AI interpret their preferences and return curated deals.

In addition to the new AI feature, Google Flights will continue to offer its traditional search functions, including price tracking, fare alerts, and calendar-based searches. The platform has also introduced an option to filter out basic economy fares on US and Canadian routes.

Part of a broader push for AI tools in travel search

The launch comes as competition to enable AI-powered search intensifies in the online travel sector. Booking.com, Expedia, Trip.com, Agoda, and Skyscanner have all rolled out AI-driven search features over the past two years.

  • Booking.com introduced AI trip planners powered by large language models that suggest destinations, itineraries, and personalised deals.
  • Expedia launched a “conversational trip planning” tool in 2023, enabling natural language prompts to help users refine searches for flights and hotels.
  • Skyscanner introduced an AI assistant, “Savvy Search” tool in 2024 that can respond to open-ended queries such as “Find me the cheapest flights to sunny destinations in September.”
  • Trip.com and Agoda have also deployed AI-driven deal finders to reduce the friction of navigating complex filters and options.

Google’s entry into this space highlights the growing role of generative AI in search, simplifying trip planning and shopping for deals and saving travellers hours spent on search alone.

Google Flights edges out competitors on search visibility

In the competitive travel search space, Google Flights is gaining dominance in terms of organic search visibility. As many as 8 out of 10 travellers use metasearch engines such as Google Flights, Skyscanner, or Kayak to plan their trips. In that mix, Google’s prominence is growing.

  • A detailed 2024 analysis by PROS tracked keyword rankings across major regions. On desktop in the US, Google Flights grew first-page visibility from 22.9% to 47.6%—a +24.7 percentage point jump.
  • In the UK, it more than doubled first-page presence (13.2% → 30.6%, +17.4pp), while in Canada, visibility increased from 21.4% to 30.7% (+9.3pp). Google Flights made similar gains in Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.
  • Meanwhile, many OTAs and metasearch competitors like Momondo, Trip.com, Kiwi.com, Cheapflights, Orbitz, and others lost ground in first-page rankings across these markets.
  • From an SEO standpoint, Google Flights already consistently occupied position one for about five times as many keywords as top OTAs in 2021.

Google Flights is capturing the bulk of flight-related search visibility, driving a significant volume of travel-related traffic to its platform. The introduction of AI tools in the mix will further intensify this competition.
